After graduating from San Mateo High School in 1954, Kristofferson joined Pomona College. After living the army in 1965, Kristofferson relocated to Nashville and struggled for success in music. He worked odd jobs like sweeping floors at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville and as a commercial helicopter pilot for Petroleum Helicopters International. Johnny Cash recorded Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down which won Kristofferson Songwriter of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.

Although unsuccessful, he signed with Epic Records in 1967 and released Golden Idol/Killing Time. Several years later, Kristofferson gained momentum as a songwriter, performer, and recording artist.
